A Study on the Effect of Group Art Therapy on Shelter-residing Children¡¯s Emotional Intelligence

Abstract
The object of this study is to show the effectiveness of the group art therapy concerning children's emotional intelligence in facilities. This program contains four categories including emotion recognition & expression, emotion facilitation in thoughts, application of emotional knowledge, and emotion control which are subordinated sections in emotional intelligence based on the recent emotional intelligence model. Also, it is divided by three levels concerning development of recognition ability, emotion development, and expansion of observed objects which are psychiatric mechanism and composed of 10 sessions. The subjects were 20 shelter-resident children and 10 of them were assigned to the experimental group and the others were to the control group. Only the experimental group members participated in this program two times a week for 90 minutes, respectively. In order to verify the effectiveness, we conducted pre & pro emotional intelligence examinations and analyzed the differences and covariation(ANCOVA). As a result, the experimental group showed positive effectiveness in the improvement of their emotional intelligence compared to the control group. There are some outstanding differences in sub-sections including thinking facilitation, emotion control, and empathy. Therefore, we certify that the group art therapy helps the improvement of children's emotional intelligence in facilities. Therefore, we were certain that the group art therapy program would be helpful for shelter-resident children to adjust themselves in societ.
